What Is a Side Quest in Real Life?
A practical definition of real-life side quests, plus a simple test for turning an idea into an activity you can actually finish.
A side quest is optional, specific, and finishable
In a game, a side quest sits outside the main storyline. You can choose it because it looks interesting, useful, funny, or unexpectedly meaningful. A real-life side quest works the same way: it is a small optional mission that gives an ordinary day a clear objective.
The useful part is not the fantasy vocabulary. It is the shape of the activity. A good side quest tells you what to do, creates a small reason to care, and gives you a clear moment when the quest is complete.
The three-part side quest test
Before calling an idea a side quest, check whether it answers three questions. If any answer is missing, make the activity more concrete before you begin.
- Action: What will you physically do?
- Scene: Where, when, or with whom will it happen?
- Finish line: What observable result marks the quest complete?
Turn a vague idea into a real quest
“Go outside” is a direction, but it is not much of a quest. “Walk to a street you have never taken, find one detail worth photographing, and return by a different route” has an action, a scene, and a finish line.
The same method works for creative, social, and restorative activities. “Draw something” becomes “Choose the strangest object in your kitchen and sketch it in ten lines.” “See a friend” becomes “Invite a friend on a fifteen-minute snack hunt and each choose one thing the other has never tried.”
Small does not mean pointless
A side quest does not have to improve your career, transform your health, or become a new habit. Its value can be curiosity, connection, a story to tell, or simply breaking the pattern of an otherwise forgettable afternoon.
Keep the stakes low enough that starting feels easy. If a quest requires weeks of planning, significant money, or specialist skill, split it into a first mission you can complete today. The best next quest is often the one you will actually begin.
